1. Organise your at-home blowout toolkit

Preparation makes perfect, and having all your favourite haircare and styling products ready to go will simplify the process of blowing out your hair at home. Make sure there’s space to lay out your products when they’re not in use – this will also keep corded tools from becoming tangled. Set yourself up with the following hair tools:

  • Versatile styler – for a variety of styles, use the Shark Flexstyle Air Styling & Drying System. Featuring six attachments, this hair dryer and air styling system tool can be used for a smooth at-home blowout, bouncy curls, or enhancing natural texture – with zero heat damage to your hair.
  • Hot brush styling – the Shark SmoothStyle Heated Comb Straightener + Smoother is an all-in-one smoothing hot brush that takes your hair from wet to dry using less heat. Dry, volumise, straighten and smooth – the perfect tool for a streamlined at-home blow dry.

2. Wash your hair with the right products for your hair type

Your pre-blowout shower acts as the wash and rinse that would take place in a salon. It’s important to use hair products that are suited for your specific hair type and needs.

  • Straight hair: flatness and excess oil are common concerns for this hair type. A volumising formula will help lift at the root and give your hair an overall fuller appearance that helps with blowing out hair later. If oil control is your main concern, opt for a clarifying shampoo that will cleanse the scalp and help regulate oil levels. Choose a complementary conditioner that hydrates your ends without weighing your hair down.
  • Wavy or curly hair: wavy and curly hair types can struggle with frizz, so the focus for your hair care can be hydration and enhancing your natural wave or curl pattern. Seek out smoothing and moisture-boosting formulas that will make your strands more manageable. Pair with a nourishing conditioner that seals your cuticles and enhances shine.
  • Coily hair: this is delicate hair type that can be prone to breakage, so we suggest prioritising hydration. This might include ultra-nourishing hair masks and conditioners or co-washing which involves washing your hair with just a conditioner to prevent stripping the hair’s natural oils.

3. Detangle and unknot

When your is wet, it can be more vulnerable to breakage, affecting the result of your at-home hair blowout. Using a wide-toothed comb, gently detangle your hair while it’s wet. Instead of starting at the root and combing downwards, start combing from the ends and gradually work your way up.

Pro tip: for particularly stubborn knots, hold the knot between your fingers and comb through them using an upward motion. And if it still won’t budge, apply a little bit of conditioner to the knot to loosen things up.

4. Rough dry your hair

Once your hair is tangle-free, apply a heat protectant spray to minimise damage to your strands. Given that the hair is at its most vulnerable when wet, we recommend that you rough dry your hair about 70-80%, focusing on the roots, before precisely styling with your chosen styler or blow-dry attachments.

Opt for a heat-adjustable hair dryer that promotes smoothness and shine. Adjustable hair dryers allow you to pick the best heat setting for your hair. If you have fine or thin hair, stick to a low heat to minimise heat damage to your scalp and strands. Whereas if you have thick hair, you can opt for medium heat when rough drying.

5. Section your hair

When learning how to blow out hair at home, the way you section is key to the success of your final look. Make sure each section is neat and tidy and use your choice of hair clip to hold each section in place.

We recommend sectioning your hair into three horizontal sections:

  • Using a comb or finger, take your hair from one side of your crown (usually near the corner of your forehead) to the other side of your crown, sectioning the top of your hair. Comb the hair up, twist and secure in place.
  • Next, go a bit lower, taking your hair from the top of one ear, and work your way around to the top of the other, gathering the middle section. Again, twist and secure.
  • This will leave the final bottom section – which you can style first.

6. Style with the right attachments for your hair type

For styling, take your Shark FlexStyle, and ready the correct styler attachment for your desired look. Let’s explore some popular styles for blowing out your hair at home.

  • Soft curl blowout: Make sure your hair is slightly damp – this is better for manipulating the shape of the hair when styling. Attach the Auto Wrap Curler barrel to your FlexStyle. Bring a small section of hair to the barrel, letting the ends dangle until the hair automatically self-wraps around the barrel. Hold in place for 10 seconds, then use the Cold Shot function for 10 seconds to set the curl. Turn off the wand and pull the barrel of hair straight down. Repeat on all remaining sections.
  • Stretched blowout: Attach the styling concentrator and blow-dry your hair in the same direction you brush. We suggest a round brush to give your hair that desired lift at the roots and movement at the ends. The round brush technique is a little trickier to master so practise is key and make sure to brush in an upward direction at the roots for added volume.
  • Bouncy blowout: Attach the oval brush and slowly roll your hair outwards, from the roots to the end. If you want extra volume, brush on an outward and upward angle. We love this attachment because you don’t need perfect technique to mimic a salon blowout. The Shark SmoothStyle will also work to give you bouncy blowout effect, just be sure to work hair in an upward and outward movement for added volume.
  • High-shine finish: Switch to your Shark Speedstyle and attach the RapidGloss Finisher – this attachment works best on straight or straightened at-home blowouts. Place the styling tool at the top of the roots and glide down the length of your hair for a glossy finish.

7. Complete your look with hairspray

Finally, lock your gorgeous new hair in place with hairspray. Blowout hair takes time and effort, so use a quality product that will hold.

If you have long or naturally curly hair, a light hairspray will work wonders without making your hair feel crunchy. If you have short or fine hair, a medium strength hairspray is more than enough. But, if you want your blowout to stay perfect for a special event, then opt for a strong hairspray. For those who prefer a different texture, a mousse can do wonders for hair – just remember to add to hair when damp.

Tips to get your salon look at home

Mastering a good at-home blowout doesn’t happen overnight, so we want to leave you with some final do’s and don'ts to blow out hair at home and get the most out of your styling tools.

  • Don’t be discouraged if you don’t get the perfect style the first time. A good blowout requires precision and patience – your technique will develop over time!
  • Don’t skip the rough-drying stage. Not only does this speed up your blow dry, applying direct heat to vulnerable hair can cause breakage.
  • Do check your brush angles. This is important for your end result – are you trying to create a 90s blowout, an inward blowout? The angle of your brush also plays a key role in taming a cowlick; you’ll want to push the hair in the opposite direction to ‘confuse’ (and smooth) the cowlick.
  • Do use the right attachment for your hair type. For example, the Speedstyle turbo concentrator is perfect for smoothing and stretching coily hair, while the QuickSmooth brush attachment is ideal for boosting volume on straight hair. Knowing what works for your hair type will give you the best results.
